The HTGR is one of the promising candidates which can contribute to the strengthening of the global nuclear safety and reduction of greenhouse effect gas emission because of the inherent safety characteristics as well as high temperature heat supply capability. To deploy the HTGR, JAEA have performed design research and development of a commercial HTGR system and demonstration of heat utilization by using HTTR. In addition, development of oxidation tolerant fuel to enhance HTGR safety, investigation of effective incineration of plutonium (Pu) for a proliferation concern due to the capability of accepting high fuel burn-up by fully utilizing the unique characteristics, investigation of innovative HTGR to prevent generation of Minor Actinide (MA) to reduce environmental burden, and investigation to reduce volume of radioactive waste have been performed.
