Theme (tentative)
"Global Response to Nuclear and Radiological Terrorism & the Future of Nuclear Forensics"
As global efforts toward decarbonization accelerate, nuclear energy is being reconsidered as a sustainable and secure solution. However, the international landscape surrounding nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear security is becoming increasingly complex, with growing concerns over the misuse of nuclear and radiological materials.
The use of nuclear and radioactive materials is expanding, and this trend has heightened the risk of nuclear and radiological terrorism, making it imperative to strengthen security frameworks both domestically and internationally.
Efforts to advance nuclear forensics technologies are underway globally to strengthen response capabilities against nuclear and radiological threats. These include the development of analytical methods to trace the origin and history of seized materials, portable instruments for field deployment, and AI-based data analysis techniques. Through international exercises and technical exchanges, progress is being made to improve the reliability, interoperability, and consistency of forensic practices across borders.
Given the transboundary nature of nuclear terrorism, international cooperation is essential. This includes information sharing, technical assistance, capacity building, and emergency preparedness. Tailored support and sustainable human resource development are especially critical.
