Technical support for decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant
Various R&D activities are performed to help with the early completion of the plant decommissioning. They are briefly introduced on these pages.
Estimation of current status inside reactors
Various R&D activities are performed to develop computer codes and estimate how the accident progressed and how the reactor core was damaged.
Characterization of fuel debris
The characteristics of the fuel debris (solidified melt of fuels and other core materials) are investigated to develop the removal method.
Integrity assessment of reactor/fuel assembly materials
The integrity of metallic materials used for the reactor / fuel assemblies is evaluated in an environment of gamma ray radiation and water including seawater ingredients.
R&D for disposal and storage of radioactive waste
Radionuclide analysis and safety evaluation are performed to determine the disposal and storage method for the primary waste generated by the accident and the secondary waste generated by the processing of the contaminated water.
