Introduction:
-
The Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN) has been conducting research and development on non-destructive analysis (NDA) techniques applicable to safeguards and nuclear security as part of the project to promote nuclear security enhancement supported by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
Among the NDA techniques, the development of Neutron Resonance Non-destructive Analysis (NRA) technology began in fiscal year 2022 as Phase I, focusing on improving measurement accuracy and miniaturizing equipment toward future practical implementation. Since Phase I will conclude in March 2026, this workshop is being organized to present the achievements and progress of the current development, evaluate the results, and gather expert opinions on the technical direction for Phase II.
In Phase II, efforts will focus on advancing analytical methods. For this purpose, the use of resonance analysis tools to quantify nuclear materials in unknown samples will be essential. A representative analysis code for this purpose is REFIT, which enables the analysis of neutron transmission, capture, fission, and scattering data. Accordingly, the final day of this workshop will include a session themed around resonance analysis methodologies and the use of REFIT, aiming to promote exchange among researchers involved in neutron resonance analysis and to explore opportunities for new collaborative research.
Overview:
-
The workshop will focus on evaluating the progress of two ongoing projects:
- Development of a compact system for Neutron Resonance Transmission Analysis (NRTA)
- Development of an integrated system combining Neutron Resonance Fission Neutron Analysis (NRFNA), Neutron Resonance Capture Analysis (NRCA), and NRTA
- Day 1:
- Presentations and evaluation of the two projects
- Day 2 (AM):
- Technical visit to JAEA laboratories;
- Day 2 (PM):
- Presentations on nuclear data, neutron resonance analysis (NRA), or related topics
- Day 3:
- REFIT exercises and practical sessions (EC-JRC Peter Schillebeeckx, JAEA Gerard Rovira Leveroni)
