DOE/NNSA awarded JAEA a Commemorative Medallion

JAEA was presented with a commemorative medallion by Ms. Kasia Mendelsohn, Assistant Deputy Administrator for Nonproliferation and International Security, USDOE/NNSA1 at the celebration of the 25-year anniversary of the official start of the cooperation between JAEA and USDOE/NNSA, held in Ibaraki, Japan. Inscribed on the medallion is a message from Daniel B. Poneman, Deputy Secretary of Energy, with his signature.
The anniversary celebration was jointly held by JAEA and USDOE/NNSA on February 13, 2013 in Mito as a special session of the 25th annual review meeting under the JAEA-USDOE/NNSA Arrangement in the field of safeguards, nonproliferation and nuclear security that was signed in 1988. Under this Arrangement, 133 technical projects have been successfully conducted so far.
The history of the 25 years of cooperation includes technology development of non-destructive measurement systems for IAEA safeguards and material accountancy, cooperative activities for nuclear security, etc. In the special session, these achievements were presented by both sides, following introductory remarks by Ms. Mendelsohn and Dr. Hideki Namba, the Executive Director of JAEA. At the end of the session, Ms. Mendelsohn handed over the commemorative medallion to Dr. Namba.
JAEA/Japan has been the closest partner of DOE/NNSA in the field of nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear security in terms of the length, breadth and depth of cooperation. The commemorative medallion symbolizes this close relationship and we expect this cooperation to continue as a model for international cooperation in this field.
