Maintenance of equipment
Appropriate maintenance of equipment is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the nuclear installation. Therefore, our inspections, equipment maintenance, and frequencies thereof appropriately reflect the demands of the law and the safety regulations for nuclear facilities. The result inspection and maintenance are consistently evaluated, and when necessary, our inspection and maintenance procedures are reviewed and corrective measures are executed.
Moreover, inspection and maintenance measures employed on older facilities must consider the importance of the equipment and the effects of deterioration, etc. due to the age of the equipment. Subsequently, any needed are executed, and the health of the facility is secured.
Representative facilities
As representative facilities constituting a measure of the reliability of the nuclear installation, I present below a summary of the Ventilation System and the Radioactive Waste Water System.
Ventilation System
The air within the nuclear facilities must be continuously filtered for the removal of radioactive corpuscles by means of a filter device consisting of an efficient air filter (HEPA filter) through which air is passed and exhausted from an exhaust cylinder. There are unit- and chamber-type filter devices, and choosing the device to be employed is properly determined by the purpose of use.
Radioactive Waste Water System
Wastewater drainage within nuclear facilities is housed in a separate tank designed for the waste fluid. As a result of the measurements of the radiation level, this wastewater is discharged if the radiation level is below a standard value. Waste with a radiation level above the standard is transported to an approved garbage dump by the tank lorry, and all wastewater is then subjected to appropriate processing.
Energy conservation of nuclear facilities
For the energy conservation of nuclear facilities, the following three activities are executed:
- Nuclear facilities are regularly patrolled to minimize energy wastage to check the situation of energy conservation activity in each facility, and all unnecessary equipment are powered-off, the appropriate indoor temperature is maintained,
- Power consumption of nuclear facilities is suppressed through the introduction of equipment with improved efficiency, such as lighting equipment, air-conditioning systems, electrical transformers, etc. Moreover, the boiler equipment used to make the steam for heating of the nuclear facilities, etc. is fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) converted from grade-A crude oil, and the combustion efficiency is thereby enhanced.
- Concerning air conditioning of nuclear facilities, temperature management is conducted in such a way that the refrigeration system is powered-off for some time, and power saving in the summer is thereby executed.
