(Summary)
For the long-term operation and enhanced safety of light water reactors, aging degradation phenomena such as corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of light water reactor materials exposed to high-temperature and high-pressure water and steam are critical issues. In addition, with the introduction of new materials such as accident tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding, materials-related challenges with a view to application in actual plants are expanding, including understanding the degradation behavior of materials under irradiation environments and evaluating the integrity of materials produced by new manufacturing technologies. Furthermore, in fields related to light water reactors, there are materials that must maintain their integrity over periods exceeding 50 years, such as storage canisters for fuel debris and overpacks for high-level radioactive waste. For such materials, elucidating long-term corrosion mechanisms and establishing corrosion prediction technologies are pressing challenges.
In this theme, in order to elucidate the corrosion behavior common to these technical challenges and to establish technologies for the development and evaluation of new corrosion-resistant materials, we will conduct research utilizing the irradiation facilities, hot laboratories and other facilities available at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Specifically, the research covers the evaluation and modeling of material degradation under irradiation environments, the development of material screening methods from the viewpoint of corrosion and other degradation phenomena, the establishment of long-term corrosion prediction technologies, and the integrity assessment of novel materials and of materials produced through new manufacturing processes.
This theme is carried out as part of the projects promoted by the Research Center for LWR Engineering on the development of accident tolerant fuel cladding materials and on long-term corrosion prediction for nuclear system materials. The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for these projects.
Of particular importance in this theme is the perspective of implementation in society, that is, connecting research outcomes to the development of codes and standards and to their application in actual plants. The successful applicant will not only disseminate the findings as academic achievements, but also define the practical goals of the research in light of the needs of industry and regulatory bodies, and carry the research forward with a clear view toward implementation in collaboration with external organizations.

Qualification requirements
(1) Having a master’s degree or higher in the field related to the research theme.
*Applicants who do not hold a doctoral degree are expected to obtain one after joining the organization.
(2) Applicants with practical experience in design or project management at companies or research institutes involved in nuclear power plants are preferred.
