Reserach and development on geological disposal
Technical development of engineered barriers suitable for geological environment is conducted based on geoscientific research results. Research on detailed designing methods of disposal system and tests for confirmation of safety assessment methods are also conducted in shafts and drifts.

Tasks
> Verification of engineering technology for engineered barriers, etc.
> Confirmation of applicability of design method
> Confirmation of applicability of safety assessment method

Verification of engineering technology for engineered barriers etc.
Research and development is conducted to assess the accuracy required for engineered barrier placement equipment. Research and development is also conducted on technology of backfilling shafts and drifts.
What is an engineered barrier?
Vitrified high-level radioactive waste is wrapped with a metallic overpack and then covered with buffer material. An engineered barrier plays a role of a wall between the waste and geological formations.
By the way, how do you place an engineered barrier underground?
The engineered barrier is correctly positioned using a remote-controlled machine. Testing concerning this technique is also being planned.

What kind of research and development is necessary for backfilling shafts?
Research on methods and materials for backfilling is necessary. Based on this research, drift backfilling test will be carried out to confirm the performance of method and material.

Confirmation of applicability of design method
Research and development is conducted in designing the entire disposal system, including geological formations in which the waste is to be emplaced.
What kind of research is conducted?
We conduct research for ensuring the stability of bedrock, engineered barriers, shafts and drifts over a long period of time. Look at the drawing on the right for details.

Confirmation of applicability of safety assessment method
Items, quantities and accuracy of geological environment data necessary for safety assessment of geological disposal are confirmed by conducting applicability test and improving models used for safety assessment.
