Shared Use of Facilities Including Joyo

Joyo is a sodium-cooled fast reactor that has been used for the development of fuel and materials for fast reactors as an irradiation facility that provides the world’s highest level of fast neutron flux. In addition, related Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) facilities are located adjacent to Joyo, where various types of test equipment is installed in hot cells in order to accommodate the needs of various types of PIEs concerning fuel and material. Accordingly, a system that can perform a series of activities from irradiation to PIE and accommodate with a wide range of use patterns is provided.
The JAEA has designated the globally valuable fast neutron irradiation facility and the PIE facilities as shared use facilities in order that external users can utilize these facilities for their own purposes under the shared facility use system.

Procedure for Shared Use of Facilities Including Joyo

It is recommended that you negotiate with the Fast Reactor Technology Section of the Experimental Fast Reactor Department of the JAEA (FRTS), the section responsible for inquiries regarding technical matters, prior to application, while the Intellectual Property and Industry-Academia Collaboration Section of Research and Development Promotion Department of the JAEA is the contact section for applications and contracts related to the use of Joyo and the PIE facilities.
After negotiation, you will be asked to submit your application for use of Joyo and/or other facilities to the FRTS. And after providing the required information, JAEA will evaluate feasibility and safety of the request for use.
For the periodic advertisement of the general quota, you are asked to submit the "Application Form for Review of the Subject for Shared Facility Use" to the FRTS after providing the required information. After notification of acceptance, the formal contract procedure is launched with the "Application Form for Shared facility use."
A flow chart of the procedure for shared facility use is shown below.
