Technology Development for Decommissioning

Technology development related to decommissioning

In the decommissioning, we proceed to efficiently perform the demolition and removal on the premise of ensuring safety, and promote the technology development necessary to reduce the amount of waste generated.

Fugen has the following features:
- It is a heavy-water-moderated boiling-light-water-cooled pressure tube type reactor.
- Its structure of the reactor body is complex and composed of diverse materials.
- It is used heavy water as a moderator.

For these reasons, we have been promoted the following developments as the Fugen unique challenges related to the dismantlement of the facility:
- Reactor core dismantling technology
- Heavy-water and tritium-based dismantling technology

In order to advance the decommissioning safely and rationally, engineering technology related to decommissioning is indispensable. Therefore, we will proceed to develop the "evaluation technology of dismantlement plan" as well as promote to validate the technology by reflecting the findings of the decommissioning of Fugen. On the other hand, the equipment other than the reactor body and heavy water system is the same as that of the light-water reactor (BWR), so the existing technologies will be utilized and improved/upgraded to apply Fugen.
