Announcement of Research and Development Purpose Plutonium Utilization Plan at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency throughout Fiscal Year 2026

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) hereby announces the Research and Development (R&D) purpose plutonium utilization plan throughout Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 as follows:

"Research and Development Purpose Plutonium Utilization Plan at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency" for FY2025 is shown in the attached table.

Outline

Forecast stockpile amount of the R&D purpose plutonium (forecast as of the end of FY2025) in JAEA is approximately 3.6 tons.

After the restart of “JOYO”'s operation, JAEA plans to use the R&D purpose plutonium at “JOYO”.

In addition, it will be used for basic research on treatment technology of spent fuels, plutonium stabilization studies, and other research and development activities within the scope of the purpose and amount permitted by R&D facilities.

This plan is subject to change depending on the R&D progress.
