A vision of the future with High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors through collaboration between Japan and the UK
- AMR Phase B Showcase event -
In July 2023, the UK Government identified High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs) as a technology which can have a significant impact on the use of nuclear energy for decarbonisation, and launched the Advanced Modular Reactor Research, Development & Demonstration (AMR RD&D) programme with the aim of demonstrating the use of this technology.
In order to accelerate research and development, and related activities for early deployment of HTGRs, JAEA and NNL signed a Collaboration Memorandum for HTGR Demonstration Reactor programme (Phase B) and a Collaboration Memorandum for the Coated Particle Fuel programme (Step 1) under the comprehensive Memorandum of Co-operation in the field of HTGR.
NNL hosted the ‘AMR Phase B Showcase’ at the Delta Hotel in Preston, northwest England, on 6th and 7th November 2024. This event was held to highlight the potential of HTGR technology to Government and industry, including potential end-users of the heat output and was attended by around 100 people from the governments, industry and academia in the UK and Japan.
NNL and JAEA presented the latest progress of the AMR Phase B and UK CPF Step 1 programme. Westinghouse, Jacobs and Heidelberg Materials UK from the UK and Nuclear Fuel Industries, Ltd. and TOYO TANSO CO., LTD. from Japanese industry attended and introduced their development achievements.
JAEA will collaborate with NNL to accelerate early deployment of HTGRs in order to contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2050.
