Japan Atomic Energy Agency

To commemorate the designation of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) as a Collaborating Centre (CC) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the ceremony was held remotely on November 26, 2021, with attendance of Dr. Mikhail Chudakov and Ms. Lydie Evrard, the two IAEA Deputy Directors General concerned, Mr. HIKIHARA Takeshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, and Mr. KODAMA Toshio, JAEA President, at which IAEA CC plaque was presented to JAEA.

IAEA CC is an IAEA Member State institution designated by the relevant IAEA Deputy Director General to support the IAEA’s programmatic activities through the implementation of agreed Work Plan.

Under this scheme, JAEA was designated concurrently by the IAEA as its CC in the two distinct fields of a) nuclear security, and b) decommissioning and waste management this October. These are two enablers for sustainable use of nuclear energy which makes up indispensable part of energy mix towards the objective of reaching carbon neutrality by mid-century.

Under the scheme of IAEA Collaborating Centre, in the field of nuclear security, the Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN) of JAEA will further contribute to the IAEA’s capacity building activities to assist Member States in enhancing their national capacities, and will share information on radiation detection system for enhancing nuclear security developed under the JAEA’s projects more effectively.

In the field of decommissioning and waste management, JAEA will support the IAEA’s relevant activities through enhancing and strengthening R&D and practical knowledge in the area of radiological characterization for nuclear decommissioning.

During the ceremony, JAEA President KODAMA stressed in his remarks that: “As an increasing number of states pursue nuclear energy, decommissioning and waste management as well as nuclear security are two components essential for its sustainable use. JAEA is determined to work together with the IAEA in this scheme to contribute to the international community in these two important areas.”
