Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)
Emulsion Flow Technologies Co., Ltd.

Passing on limited rare metals to the future
- Certification of a venture company born from JAEA, Emulsion Flow Technologies Co., Ltd. -

[Summary of announcement]
  • The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (hereinafter “JAEA”) certified Emulsion Flow Technologies Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “EFT) [1] whose core technology is a new solvent extraction technology called “Emulsion Flow” developed by JAEA, as a JAEA-born venture company.
  • Emulsion flow is one of solvent extraction technologies born from studies on element separation from spent nuclear fuels. Conventional solvent extraction technologies require three processes of “mixing”, “placing”, and “separating” liquid phases. On the other hand, Emulsion Flow is an innovative solvent extraction technology capable of performing these three processes at the same time in one process of “liquid feeding”.
  • EFT will realize “horizontal recycling”, which enables recovered rare metals to be directly recycled in high-tech industries, by establishing a technology to recover rare metals contained in lithium-ion batteries, etc. with high efficiency and high purity and at low cost under the concept of utilizing the emulsion flow technology in “urban mines”.
  • Now, EFT is committed to spreading this new “Emulsion Flow” technology throughout the world in place of conventional solvent extraction technologies and contributing to the stable supply of rare metals into the future which are indispensable for realizing a decarbonized society (carbon neutral) promoted by the government of Japan.
