The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) hereby announces the plutonium utilization plan for research and development throughout Japanese Fiscal Year (JFY) 2021 as follows:

"Plutonium Utilization Plan for Research and Development at the JAEA for JFY 2021" is shown in attached table.

[ Outline ]

At the end of JFY 2020, JAEA will keep approx. 3.6 tons of plutonium for the research and development purposes.

At present, the experimental fast reactor “JOYO” is in the process of receiving confirmation of conformity to the new regulation standards. After obtaining the permission for changes in reactor installation, JAEA plans to use the plutonium at “JOYO”.

In addition, it will be used for basic research on treatment technology of spent fuels, plutonium stabilization studies, and other research and development activities within the scope of the purpose and amount permitted by R&D facilities.

This plan is subject to change depending on the progress of research and development.
