Development of Highly-Performance and Easily Assembled Tent for Quickly Evacuation of Workers in case of Contamination
—Contributing to Strengthening of Safety Measures at Nuclear Facilities in Emergency—

In the event of contamination in a nuclear facility, , sealed tents are set up at the entrances of rooms to prevent the spread of contamination, and workers are decontaminated in the tents. However, conventional tents take a long time to set up. As a result, the start of decontamination is delayed and the risk of internal exposure increases.

Therefore, a tent which improves on this issue has been developed, and is being operated in some facilities of JAEA. It is believed that this tent will be able to greatly contribute to strengthening safety measures during emergencies at nuclear power facilities. The main points of improvement are as described below.

  1. Weight reduction by means of structural improvements and material changes of the frame, enabling a great reduction in setup time: from about 2 hours to about 20 minutes.
  2. Enabling setup of the tent with diverse layouts in accordance with the setup location due to improvements in tent-connecting methods.
  3. Also enabling layouts that secure multiple evacuation routes in case of numerous workers.

In the respect that this tent technology enables work in a sealed space that separates the inside from the outside environment, thereby preventing the spread of contamination to the outside environment and the like, it is expected that it will be utilized at nuclear power facilities both in Japan and abroad.
