Statement by President Okazaki

On June 1, 2007, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) was designated by the MEXT as Japanese Implementing Agency of the Broader Approach Agreement. As the President of the Implementing Agency, I deeply recognize the significance of our duty. The Broader Approach Activities are the R&D projects to be implemented in Japan by the collaboration of Japan and the EURATOM, in support of the ITER Project and an early realization of fusion energy for peaceful purpose.

JAEA starts two projects in Rokkasho-mura in Aomori Prefecture; (1) the Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities for the International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility, (2) the International Fusion Energy Research Center, and one project in Naka-shi in Ibaraki Prefecture; (3) the Satellite Tokamak Programme (JT-60SA).

For the success of the Broader Approach Activities, JAEA will make every effort to fulfill its mission as Japanese Implementing Agency and promote international collaboration in fusion energy development. Your assistance and advice are highly appreciated.
