Ratification of Agreement Between the Department of Energy of the United States of America (DOE) and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) for Cooperation in Research and Development in Nuclear Science and Energy

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the Department of Energy of the United States of America (DOE) approved the �Agreement for Cooperation in Research and Development in Nuclear Science and Energy�(the Agreement) on April 4, 2007.


1.Background
The former Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and the former Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute had previously entered into the �Agreement in the Field of Nuclear Research and Development� and the �Agreement in the Field of Nuclear Technologies�, respectively, with DOE. These two agreements provided the basis for a wide ranging bilateral cooperation, which produced many tangible achievements.
The new Agreement was formalized through negotiations between JAEA and DOE. These negotiations had been initiated after the October 2005 integration of the aforementioned organizations to pursue a comprehensive agreement for R&D cooperation.


2.Approval of the Agreement
Mr. Toshio Okazaki, President of JAEA, approved the Agreement with Mr. Dennis Spurgeon, Acting Under Secretary for Energy of DOE, on April 4, 2007 in Washington, D.C.

(2) Methods of Cooperation
     Exchange of experts
     Exchange of samples, materials, instruments, etc.
     Exchange of unclassified information
     Joint research
     Meetings including seminars and workshops
     Use of the other Party�s facilities
(3) Term of the Agreement: The Agreement remains in force for 10 years, from April
     4, 2007 to April 3, 2017.
