IAEA Lise Meitner Programme Concludes Successfully
The IAEA Lise Meitner Programme (LMP) took place in Japan from June 9 to June 20.
Launched in 2023 under the initiative of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Grossi, the LMP promotes the career development of women in the nuclear field. This programme has previously been held in the United States, South Korea, and Argentina. This year marks Japan’s inaugural hosting of the LMP, co-hosted by the Japanese Cabinet Office and the IAEA. Fifteen early- and mid-career women professionals from around the world participated in the programme. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) contributed to the programme by providing technical tours and practical training at its facilities.
From June 16 to 19, participants engaged in a three-day tour and practical training experience at the Nuclear Science Research Institute, the Oarai Nuclear Engineering Research Institute, and the Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development. The activities included hands-on training such as manipulator operation at the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor (NSRR), and practical training related to nuclear security and safeguards using virtual reality (VR) at the Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation, Security and Human Resource Development (ISCN).

Additionally, LMP participants and JAEA female staff gathered for a lunch meeting on June 17. We had a lively discussion, asking "What support would be beneficial for women's career advancement?".
JAEA has been long contributing to the IAEA by providing its expertise and training of personnel to IAEA member countries to support IAEA activities for peaceful use of nuclear energy worldwide. JAEA will continue to strengthen its cooperation with the IAEA to support capacity-building programs in the nuclear field.
