Signs Arrangement on Comprehensive Cooperation
with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
For strengthening partnerships in the areas of peaceful use
and applications of nuclear energy

  • On 20 February, JAEA concluded with the IAEA Practical Arrangements on Cooperation in the Area of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Power and Non-Power Applications, with the aim of strengthening the partnership between the two organizations as well as supporting a wide range of IAEA's work for its member countries to utilize nuclear energy in a peaceful and safe manner.
  • Taking note of the globally increasing momentum in recent years towards the use of nuclear energy with the goal of achieving a net zero society, JAEA will continue to strengthen its support for capacity building programmes dealing with the safety of nuclear power that have been conducted in cooperation with the IAEA, as well as its technical contributions made through sharing knowledge and expertise.
  • With this arrangement, JAEA will seek to newly integrate IAEA's initiatives to apply nuclear sciences and technologies for addressing challenges in areas such as healthcare, environment and food through JAEA's relevant R&D work, thereby accelerating technical support for developing countries.
JAEA will work towards the realization of a safe and sustainable future in cooperation with the international society.

JAEA has long been contributing to the IAEA, which engages in a variety of activities for the peaceful use of nuclear energy worldwide, by providing its expert knowledge and training personnel to help IAEA member countries use nuclear energy appropriately.

The comprehensive cooperation agreement was signed on Thursday, February 20, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan in the presence of H.E. Mr. KAIFU Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna. Following the signature, in response to the growing global need to utilize nuclear energy to realize a net-zero society, the two leaders shared, among others, the importance of steadily promoting support for IAEA's member countries to use nuclear energy safely and peacefully as well as applying nuclear science and technology to resolve various problems facing our society. In this context, both leaders mutually recognized the merit of further strengthening cooperation between the two organizations.
