KAERI and JAEA Confirmed the Continued Partnership on Nuclear Research toward Net Zero Society.

July 12, 2024

On July 9-10, JAEA delegation visited the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) to exchange views and information on the status of R&D activities as well as the role of national nuclear research institutes with the aim to utilize nuclear energy and technologies toward the realization of net-zero society.

In line with the Arrangement for Cooperation between the two organizations, the discussion mainly focused on R&D in the following areas: safety in nuclear power station, radiation protection and environmental monitoring, decommissioning and radioactive waste management, science and technology related to proton accelerators and neutrons, and geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Additionally, participants exchanged their views on how to enhance organizational capability through human resource development. The two organizations shared the expectation for nuclear energy to meet growing electric power demands while decarbonizing the society. It was also highlighted that ensuring nuclear safety against earthquakes and other external hazards as well as addressing nuclear back-end issues are of great significance in both countries that share geographical proximity as neighbor countries in East Asia. A technical tour of HANARO, ATLAS and SMART gave JAEA delegation an in-depth insight to learn about the state-of-the-art technologies that the KAERI has been developing.

The visit concluded with a five-year renewal of the Arrangement for Cooperation in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, under which the two organizations have been carrying out information exchange and collaborative R&D activities since 2008. The importance of continued cooperation and strong partnership was confirmed between JAEA and KAERI.
