Message from President
Expectations for nuclear energy are rising globally, not just in Japan, in pursuit of a decarbonized society, a shared challenge for humanity, and also as a means to ensure a stable power supply and effective resource utilization.
Against this backdrop, as a national research and development agency in Japan, a pioneering country in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, JAEA will strengthen international collaboration by leveraging its accumulated knowledge and expertise, contributing across a wide spectrum of fields to advance the development of the nuclear energy sector.
Driven by the surge in the information technology industry, ground-breaking innovations spanning various scientific domains are swiftly reshaping modern society. By contrast, the nuclear sector has yet to fully unlock its potential.
In other words, it remains a treasure trove of new discoveries.
This means we have a precious opportunity to tap into this wealth of insights, converting them into valuable assets that further contribute to society. Doing so, however, requires a broader, multifaceted approach to nuclear energy that goes beyond conventional boundaries.
Over seven decades of research and development since the inception of its earliest predecessor, JAEA has accumulated a vast repository of knowledge, established highly effective functions, and developed necessary facilities and essential talent. By strategically integrating these resources, as well as adding knowledge and insights from other sectors, we can deliver an array of solutions, bringing entirely new value to society.
To this end, we must break away from the practice of relying solely on our own resources and further deepen our partnerships with overseas research organizations, including the IAEA, to actively drive international collaboration.
Meanwhile, research and development on the peaceful use of nuclear energy is advancing at a rapid pace in the West in particular, and it is no exaggeration to say that global cooperation rests on a foundation of international competition.
We are renewing our resolve to fully commit ourselves to cutting-edge scientific exploration, ensuring we maintain our competitive edge on the global stage.
October 2025 marked the 20th anniversary of JAEA’s inauguration, a milestone achieved by integrating its predecessor organizations to take a fresh step forward.
Reflecting anew on the significance of these past 20 years, our entire workforce is united in redoubling efforts to create new value and meet the expectations of the nation.
