Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Project

Research and development at the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU project) began in FY2002, with a focus on key issues starting in FY2015. The MIU project achieved satisfactory results, and research was completed in FY2019. By the end of the land lease period (January 16, 2022), the backfilling of the underground facility and removal of surface facilities at the MIU Construction Site were finished.

From January 17, 2020, the "Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Project from 2020 onward" began, focusing on environmental monitoring to assess groundwater conditions at the newly leased land (Mizunami Site) for about five years. Removal of surface facility foundations and land leveling are scheduled for completion by the end of FY2027. Chemical analysis of river water, along with noise and vibration measurements around the site, will continue until all work on the site is completed.
