Studies on Performance of Engineered Barriers

Functions of engineered barriers

EDAS

The deep underground environment is anoxic and is considered to be a chemically reducing condition. Various phenomena are expected in this environment when groundwater comes into contact with engineered barriers.

EDAS (Exploratory Data Acquisition System) was designed for a systematic study of chemical interactions among rock minerals, engineered barrier materials (metal, clay, and others) and the groundwater under anaerobic conditions. Oxygen and/or carbon dioxide concentration in a nitrogen atmosphere is controlled in carefully designed chambers.
