R&D related to natural phenomena to improve the reliability of geological disposal technology
      (Summary)
Concerning the reliability of geological disposal for a variety of geological environments in Japan, further R&D is needed to understand the impact of natural phenomena such as volcanism, deep-seated fluids, faulting, and uplift and denudation on the geological disposal system. In this theme, the new hire will promote R&D on these natural phenomena in close collaborations with related parties and organizations inside and outside of JAEA in using various methods such as fieldwork, instrumental analysis, and numerical analysis to produce outputs that accurately respond to meet the needs of stakeholders in geological disposal projects. In the R&D, it is important to consider the interactions between different natural phenomena as well as the variety of geological environments. Accordingly, the new hire will perform R&D focusing on presenting suitable selections, combinations, and application procedures of the methods to be employed from several prospective methods for understanding the entire system.
In addition, since R&D based on cutting-edge scientific knowledge will also contribute to further improvement of the technical reliability of geological disposal, the new hire is encouraged to actively involved in originative research including acquisitions of research funds (e.g., Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research).
