Outline of the Shared Facility Use System

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has established the shared facility use system in order to realize the effective use of large-scale research facilities, and thereby, to provide many external users with opportunities for various types of use.
The shared facility use system allows external users to utilize the facilities, which are designated in advance for shared use, for their own research and development (R&D) objectives, as well as for industrial use, by designating JAEA advanced research facilities as public properties. This system provides a specific quota for the shared use of facilities available to external users, which is different from that for R&D use conducted by the JAEA itself.
The JAEA also has joint research and funded research systems, which differ from the shared facility use system according to use pattern.
The joint research system allows an external user to jointly perform R&D objectives common to those of the JAEA. In addition, the funded research system allows JAEA to perform R&D commissioned by an external user.
