Recruitment theme
Study on the fission product chemistry during release from the nuclear fuel and transportation in a nuclear facility.
In a severe accident of nuclear facility, fission products (FPs), such as cesium, iodine, strontium, ruthenium, induce chemical and physical interactions with structural materials, e.g. reactor vessel, hot-cell surface and so on. The chemical interactions considerably affect release amount of FPs into the environment and deposition of FPs onto the structural materials in a nuclear facility. Thus, for the accurate evalution of them, it is essential to elucidate the chemical form of FPs released from fuel and chemical reaction of FPs with structural materials in a nuclear facility.
In this study, the senior post doctoral fellow synthesizes simulant FPs compounds and/or simulated fuel containing simulant FPs compounds, and performs high-temperature heating experiments reproducing the tranposrtation of FPs and their deposition onto the surfaces of steels and concretes in a severe accident condition. He/she develops analytical teqchniques for identification of chemical form for micron-sized deposits by using micro Raman spectrometer, SEM/EDX, etc, and then acquires the data on chemical form of FPs during tranpsortion and deposition depending on atmosphere and initial FPs composition. He/she evaluates the chemical form of FPs released from fuel and chemical reaction of FPs with structural materials by using the thermodynamic calculation based on the experimental results.
