    2. Recruitment theme

Advanced radiation research for long-term storage management of radioactive wastes such as fuel debris.
      (Summary)
During the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station many types of radioactive wastes containing fuel debris are generated. In order to store these wastes safty for long time, elucidation and control of radiation effects on the wastes and their vessels (containers) are further needed.
In this research, we mainly focus on the fuel debris which will be taken out from the reactor building soon, and then investigate water radiolysis by multiple radiations (leading to hydrogen generation) and material degradation of the debris wasteforms and their vessels. As a main objective, effect of radiation quality, e.g. linear energy transfer (LET) on water radiolysis, which cannot be explained only by using low-LET radiations like Co-60 gamma-ray, is deeply investigated through the experiments and numerical analyses. Secondarily, size effect on water radiolysis in the wasteforms, which cannot be explained by using small vials, and the degradation behavior of wasteforms are investigated.
