Research on advanced model development for evaluating thermal-hydraulic phenomena during accident in light water reactor.
      (Summary)
The research on thermal hydraulic phenomena occurred in nuclear reactor and reactor containment vessel during accident including severe accident is performed to establish the evaluation model and method for understanding accident process and their influences. The developed models are used to evaluate the effectiveness of accident management measures for prevention and mitigation of these accidents.
As main subjects, the applicant performs numerical simulation to improve models and methods for evaluating reactor thermal hydraulic on reactor system response, core heat transfer, hydrogen behavior, over temperature damage of a reactor containment vessel, source term, and other related phenomena. All these researches are carried out based on experimental data obtained from the large scale test facilities and the related separate effect test facilities owned by JAEA.
The numerical simulations are mainly conducted by using lumped parameters (LP) code and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. Regarding the former, in addition to using existing code like RELAP, the applicant is involved in development and operation of domestic system code that is currently developed in Japan. Regarding the latter, the applicant implement analyses of turbulent flow, multi-phase flow, combustion including chemical reactions, aerosol behavior by using finite volume method, discrete element method, and other methods. For the comparison with the conventional CFD, the advanced method such as immersed boundary method is also subject to be studied to model complex structures and boundary.
The applicant will also conduct technical development work related to advanced measurement techniques for multi-phase flow used in the above-mentioned experiments. As examples, it includes the techniques of measurement and data processing algorithms such as ultrasonic sensor for liquid film thickness, and wire mesh sensor and electrical impedance tomography for two-dimensional void fraction distribution. The applicant will also be trying to making use of the machine learning theory to derive maximum information from the obtained experimental data. It will be applied to image reconstruction processing, inference of the missing data or optimized model parameters, and optimum structure design.
