Austin (November 20, 2008, USA) -- CCSE of JAEA was nominated as a finalist for two successive years in HPC Analytics Challenge held in the international conference SC08 (International conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis) in honor of their innovative technique for large scale data analysis.

So far, in the analysis of simulation result, researchers have judged the validity of their simulation result by finding and analyzing characteristics in detail from visualized images. This is similar that doctors judge client's state of health by finding a focus from an X-ray photograph. However, current large-scale simulation generates large amount of data which contains information corresponding to millions to billions of photographs. As a result, it requires much time and effort to find and analyze characteristics from such large amount of data. In addition, it causes misconceptions by failing to find out the important characteristics.

CCSE was nominated as a finalist in the analytics challenge of the SC07 by proposing the system which can find automatically characteristics from large amount of data with the integration of a data visualization technique and an information processing technique such as pattern matching and knowledge processing. In this year, as a progress of this research, CCSE succeeded to improve the reliability of simulation results by using various computational methods for single problem and analyzing their results in an integrated fashion. This innovative analysis technique enables researchers to execute efficiently an analysis of various large-scale simulation results by combining supercomputers located in remote locations.

At the SC08 analytics challenge, the technique was applied to the analysis of thermal displacement of High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) at Oarai Research and Development Center of JAEA, which showed the high practicality of the technique.

There have been various large-scale simulations in the nuclear field. Using the analysis technique enables researchers to obtain highly reliable results efficiently, which is expected to contribute the improvement of the safe and secure of atomic energy.
