On the occasion of the designation of JAEA as Domestic Agency on the ITER Agreement (Statement)

Today, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (hereinafter �JAEA�) was designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as the Japanese Domestic Agency which carries out activities on the basis of the ITER Agreement*. We undertake the role of Domestic Agency which performs international activities for the realization of fusion energy, and understand the significance of our mission afresh.

ITER Project is an international project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy for its realization by the international collaboration among the seven Parties, i.e. Japan, United States of America, Russian Federation, People�s Republic of China, Republic of Korea, Republic of India and EU, for 35 years including construction phase and operation phase.
JAEA will collaborate with the domestic institutes, universities and industry, and make contributions in kind by manufacturing essential equipments and facilities necessary for the construction of ITER and contributions with regard to human resources.
We will feed the cutting edge results obtained in the ITER Project which will be carried out mainly in Cadarache, France, back to the domestic fusion energy research and development, and develop activities so that they serve the promotion of science and technology.

We will fulfill our responsibilities as the Domestic Agency for the success of ITER Project and actively promote the international evolution of fusion energy development under the intimate coordination with the Broader Approach Activities which are jointly implemented by Japan and EU in parallel with ITER Project.
