JAEA designated as Japanese Domestic Agency based on ITER Agreement

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (hereinafter �JAEA�, President: Toshio OKAZAKI) was designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as the Japanese Domestic Agency which makes contributions to the ITER International Fusion Energy Organization on the basis of the �Agreement on the Establishment of the ITER International Fusion Energy Organization for the Joint Implementation of the ITER Project� (hereinafter �ITER Agreement�) which entered into force today.

JAEA was designated as the Japanese Implementing Agency on June 1, 2007, on the basis of the �Broader Approach Agreement for the future fusion� which is jointly implemented by Japan and EU. Today�s designation as the Domestic Agency on the ITER Agreement as well as the designation mentioned above establishes structure for JAEA to promote the fusion research and development internationally.

In this fiscal year, JAEA starts manufacturing superconductor of toroidal field coils, the electromagnets generating magnetic field to confine fusion plasmas, which was assigned to Japan in the ITER construction activities.
