Glossary

1)ionic liquid
Ionic liquid is an ambient temperature molten salt and has been receiving much interest as a green solvent because of its unique properties, such as negligible volatility, nonflammability and high thermal stability. The chemical and physical properties of ionic liquids are effectively tunable by altering cation and anion composing an ionic liquid. Ionic liquids are expected as novel media immiscible in water and organic solvents.

2)biomolecule
Biomolecule is a compound which is synthesized in vivo, containing amino acid, saccharide, protein, nucleic acid, etc.

3)biocatalytic reaction
Biocatalytic reaction is a reaction which proceeds through catalytic function of enzymes. Generally, the biocatalytic reaction provides extremely high specificity and catalytic efficiency compared to conventional catalytic reaction.

4)hydroxyl group
Hydroxyl group is a functional group comprised of oxygen and hydrogen. Water and alcohol have the hydroxyl group.

5)crown ether
Crown ether is a cyclic polyether, and functions as multidentate ligand with electron-pair donor oxygens. Crown ether is able to trap a target molecule inside its cavity by the size recognition.

6)heme
Heme is a porphyrin coordinated with an iron ion.

7)cytochrome c
Cytochrome c is a protein with a heme molecule. Molecular weight is around 12,500Da. The isoelectric point value is 10.6. Cytochrome c plays an important role in the biological electron transfer system.
