Sep. 29, 2006

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) announces a change of the plutonium-use plan for research and development that was released by JAEA on January 6, 2006. Contents of the change are as follows:

**************

[Outline]
  · Based on notices given to Fukui Prefecture and Tsuruga City on July 26, 2006 concerning a change of a test operation plan (for length extension of plant verification test) of the prototype fast breeder reactor MONJU, and a report submitted to Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on August 22, 2006 concerning a change of operation plan of the prototype fast breeder reactor MONJU, JAEA changed the start time of the plutonium use in MONJU to Japanese Fiscal Year (JFY) 2008 from JFY 2007 released last January. With the change, JAEA altered the time length of plutonium use in MONJU and the experimental fast reactor JOYO
  · In addition, based on a report submitted to METI on September 7, 2006 concerning a change of a use plan for the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP), JAEA changed the amount of spent fuel to be reprocessed in JFY 2006 from 31 ton Uranium (tU) to 20 tU. With the change, JAEA altered the amount of plutonium to be recovered in JFY 2006 from 0.2 ton fissile plutonium (tPuf) to 0.1 tPuf.

There is no change of purpose for use of plutonium held by JAEA for research and development of the fast breeder reactors.

JAEA will continuously announce the plutonium-use plan every fiscal year before separating plutonium.
