JAEA Publishes “Phase II Final Report of Feasibility Study on Commercialized Fast Reactor Cycle Systems”

Mar. 30, 2006

JAEA has implemented the feasibility study on commercialized fast reactor cycle systems since July 1999 in collaboration with the electric utilities in Japan, Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), nuclear manufacturers, and so on. The objective of this study is “to present both an appropriate picture of commercialization of the fast rector cycle and the research and development (R&D) program leading up to the commercialization in approximately 2015.”
A wide range of technical options have been evaluated to select several promising concepts as candidates for the commercialization in the Phase I (JFY 1999- 2000) study. In the phase II (JFY 2001-2005) study, research and development have been carried out aiming “to identify the most promising candidate concepts for the commercialization of fast reactor cycle and to draw up the future R&D program.” Today JAEA published the phase II final report which described the prioritization of R&D works toward commercialization, the R&D programs until 2015, and the potential future issues. This report was also submitted to the council of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for check & review.
