What is Clearance System?

For the clearance level

Some of the waste that is generated accompanied with the dismantling work and the like of a nuclear power plant includes also "Unnecessary products to treat as radioactive waste" other than "Products to treat as radioactive waste".

In general, since the radioactivity concentration of the "Unnecessary products to treat as radioactive waste" is very low and the effect on the human health can be ignored, they are referred to as "Clearance", and their criterion is called as "Clearance level".

The "clearance system" is a system that enables the reuse or disposal of substances with extremely low radioactivity concentration among the wastes generated during the dismantling of nuclear facility, with the confirmation of the regulatory authorities.

About the Clearance Level

For the clearance level, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approves that the effects on the human body can be ignored even how the dismantling substances such as metal and concrete generated from the controlled area are re-used or disposed of as waste when its radiation level does not exceed 0.01 mSv per year as the criterion. This radiation level becomes less than 1/100 of the natural radiation, and the clearance level has been established so as not to exceed this criterion.
