History

JNC was established as a successor organization of Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC) in October 1998. Below is the brief history since the creation of PNC in 1967.

Establishment of Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (predecessor of JNC)
May 1969 First successful test of uranium enrichment using the centrifugal separation method
June 1971 Start of the construction of Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP)
February 1972 Completion of the Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility (PFFF)
November 1972 Start of the fuel fabrication for the Experimental Fast Reactor “JOYO” at the PFFF
July 1975 Start of the fuel fabrication for the Advanced Thermal Reactor “FUGEN” at the PFPF
April 1977 First criticality of JOYO
September 1977 Start of test utilizing spent fuel at TRP
March 1978 First criticality of FUGEN
March 1978 Start of the full operation of FUGEN
December 1979 Successful extraction of enriched uranium in the pilot uranium enrichment plant in Ningyo-toge
January 1981 Start of the full-scale operation of TRP
September 1982 Start of the reprocessing test using fuel from JOYO at the Chemical Processing Facility (CPF)
June 1983 Successful reprocessing of the spent fuel from JOYO (completion of FBR nuclear fuel cycle)
October 1985 Ground-breaking ceremony of Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor MONJU
November 1985 Ground-breaking ceremony of demonstration uranium enrichment plant in Ningyo-toge
April 1988 Start of the operation of demonstration uranium enrichment plant in Ningyo-toge
October 1989 Start of the fuel fabrication for MONJU at the Plutonium Fuel Production Facility (PFPF)
October 1993 Completion of the Geological Isolation Basic Research Facility (ENTRY)
April 1994 First Criticality of MONJU
January 1995 Start of construction of the Recycle Equipment Test Facility (RETF)
January 1995 Start of the vitrified waste production at the Tokai Vitrification Facility (TVF)
December 1995 Sodium leakage accident at MONJU
March 1997 Fire and explosion accident at the Bituminization Facility at Tokai
October 1998 Establishment of Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute
August 1999 Completion and start of the operation of the Quantitative Assessment Radionuclide Migration Experimental Facility (QUARITY)
June 2000 Resumption of the operation of TRP
