Recruitment theme
Research on hydrogen safety and soundness of geopolymer wasteforms.
(Summary)
After the accident of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station secondary wastes were and are being produced through decommissioning operations. These wastes treatment represents an unprecedented challenge and requires new methods and techniques for their safe solidification. Geopolymer is one of promising binders to solidify these wastes from the point of its high thermal stability and Cs retention ability. In this research, we focus on the safety and the soundness of geopolymer material. As a main objective, the hydrogen gas production evolution under gamma irradiation is evaluated experimentally, by simulation and compared to other binders. Previously identified hydrogen gas recombination under irradiation should be precisely quantified for geopolymer and underlying mechanism of this phenomenon investigated. Secondarily, the interface between geopolymer and other materials (zeolite, concrete, steel etc…) is investigated to confirm the soundness of the wasteform and absence of deleterious interactions with the waste or surrounding materials.
