Computational Study to Understand Melting Process of Nuclear Fuels and Behavior of Radionuclides in the Environment
(Summary)
For safe management of decommission of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP), understanding of melting process of nuclear fuels and physicochemical properties of melted fuel cores and fission products inside the reactor buildings of FDNPP is highly demanded. In addition, systematic knowledge on chemical and physical states of the radionuclides inside and outside nuclear reactors is indispensable for the risk assessment of decommissioning and decontamination works. Particularly, inside of the nuclear reactors, physicochemical properties of surfaces of solidified melted fuel core strongly affected by radiation are essential for the future decommissioning processes. On the other hand, outside the nuclear reactor, interaction between biological materials and radionuclides is crucial for evaluation of direct influences of radionuclides on living creatures. Thus, interactions of radionuclides with organic and inorganic matters are significant for evaluating their effects on the environment.
The research subject of this fixed term researcher is numerical studies of physicochemical properties in microscopic level to solve the above issues in Fukushima by using appropriate methods, for example, first principles calculation method, molecular dynamics, and so on. In addition, the researcher is encouraged to develop numerical methods to understand macroscopic properties of the radionuclides based on their microscopic insights.
