Number of employees
Researcher 1 person
Job details
(1) Research field:
Laser research and development (R&D) applied for nuclear plants decommissioning and industries
(2) Job description
R&Ds on high power density Laser decontamination and Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic Pico-second pulse Laser cutting
The applied Laser and Innovative Technology Institute of JAEA has been executing the R&D on Laser decontamination for nuclear plants decommissioning. The purpose of the study is to attain higher decontamination efficiency by high power density CW Laser (~GW/cm2 class) with high-speed scanning(~20m/sec), compared with conventional Laser decontamination methods.
As spin-off effects for industries, the JAEA R&D program are also planning to work on CFRTP (Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic) Laser cutting. This material has the advantage of high strength and low weight and therefore are available for many applications, including vehicles and planes. Its disadvantage of the material, however, is difficulty of cutting. To resolve this issue, Pico-second pulse Laser processing method requires to be developed to attain high quality and high efficient cutting.
For these studies, JAEA recruits an excellent researcher who designs and fabricates dedicated experimental equipment by oneself, and sets on test conditions. The researcher is expected to reveal and clarify physical phenomena during Laser processing by various kinds of observation and measurement instruments such as a high-speed video camera and a confocal microscope, and also needs to determine most appropriate Laser irradiation conditions through these approaches.
