JAEA's policy in response to "Japanese Government's final decision
on the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor Monju"

Today, Japanese Government has issued "Japanese Government’s final decision on the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor Monju" (hereinafter "Monju policy") and "The new policy for fast reactor development in Japan" at the Inter-Ministerial Council for Nuclear Power. Along with these, it has also released a document titled "Relationship with the local governments after the decision on the decommissioning of Monju" (hereinafter "Relationship with the local governments").

The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has given instructions to Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) to appropriately undertake the duties in accordance with the "Monju policy", "The new policy for fast reactor development in Japan", and "Relationship with the local governments".

JAEA has adopted its own policy following the government’s statements as attached. We are going to implement the tasks for the decommissioning of Monju safely and steadily. In addition, we surely will make contributions to the economic growth of the local communities by working hard on the fast reactor development including sincere interaction with local communities aiming to realize a new plan to develop the region as a center for research and development on fast reactor based on "The new policy for fast reactor development in Japan".

In implementing its activities, in compliance with the regulations established by Nuclear Regulation Authority of Japan, JAEA will make genuine efforts to gain understanding of the public including local communities giving the highest priority to safety.
