Announcement of R&D Purpose Plutonium Utilization Plan at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency throughout Japanese Fiscal Year 2024

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) hereby announces the R&D purpose plutonium utilization plan throughout Japanese Fiscal Year (JFY) 2024 as follows:

"R&D purpose Plutonium Utilization Plan at the JAEA for JFY 2024" is shown in the attached table.

Outline

Forecast stockpile amount of R&D purpose plutonium (forecast as of the end of FY2023) in JAEA is approx. 3.6 tons.

After the resumption of “JOYO”'s operation, JAEA plans to use the R&D purpose plutonium at “JOYO”.

In addition, it will be used for basic research on treatment technology of spent fuels, plutonium stabilization studies, and other research and development activities within the scope of the purpose and amount permitted by R&D facilities.

This plan is subject to change depending on the progress of research and development.
