Production of New Flower Variety by Regional Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration!May. 14, 2007By using the tissue culture technology of Gunma Agricultural Technology Center and the ion beam irradiation technology of Japan Atomic Energy Agency, a new variety Vient FlamingoEwas created from a Osteospermum variety that was bred by the worlds leading breeder of Osteospermum (Mr. M. Sekiguchi) in Gunma prefecture,  What is the ion beam?: Ion beam is a stream of accelerated charged particles. New and useful traits can be induced by irradiating ion beams to plant tissues. The new varieties such as pure white and dwarf Osteospermum are expected to be produced in future.  The new variety was applied for variety registration to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan in March 2007. Within the fiscal year 2007, Gunma Agricultural Technology Center is going to provide young plants for flower growers in Gunma prefecture.
