Accomplishment of remote fusion experiment in high network security
-A great advance towards remote experiment in ITER-

Aug. 8, 2006

JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency) [President Yuichi Tonozuka] has demonstrated experiment in the large tokamak device JT-60 from Kyoto University with a newly developed system for remote experiment with high network security. This is the first demonstration that researchers in remote places can perform the experiment in a large fusion experimental device in similar environment to that for on-site researchers. It is also a great advance towards remote experiment in ITER.

Appearance of intensive large-sized fusion devices has accelerated research collaboration, in which many researchers in remote places participate in experiments in a large device. Researchers need to make or change a parameters set for plasma and device control and check the facility status quickly and frequently during the experiment. It was previously possible for researchers in remote places only to join the experiment through the video-conference system, operate diagnostic systems, and get experimental data. Therefore, the time and cost for traveling to the device site for the experiment was an issue.
Realization of remote experiment requires high security in order to prevent illegal access to the supervisory control system that protects the large facility and ensures safe operation. Fusion Research and Development Directorate and Center for Computational Science & E-systems jointly have developed a remote experiment system with high network security, by utilizing the security technology in the grid computing, which was developed by the Center for Computational Science & E-systems in the IT Based Laboratory (ITBL) project.

In the developed system, one gets access to a remote experiment server from a personal computer and edits a parameters set for the experiment. Alteration to the parameters set and illegal access to the supervisory control system are prevented by personal authentication with a digital certificate and by data encryption. As a result, high network security, higher than that in usual commercial sites, is realized. In the remote experiment server, HTML and Java are used to describe the functions such as editing a parameters set, in order to realize quick response compatible with advanced security. It is now possible for researchers in the world to perform experiments as if they are in the JT-60 control room by using the developed system in addition to the video-conference system and so on.

The result has not only enhanced the role of JT-60 as a national centralized device but also established a scientific basis for remote experiment in ITER from the ITER Remote Experimentation Center in the International Fusion Energy Research Center planned at Rokkasho in Aomori.
