Introduction
The Collaboration Center for Nuclear Engineering Research (hereafter
Center) was established on January 1, 2006. The Center's mission
is to promote collaborative nuclear engineering research among
JAEA, academia, and the domestic and international industrial
sectors.
The Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate with the cooperation
of the Industrial Collaboration Promotion Department played a
central role in establishing the Center.
The Center's role
The Center's role is to be the focal point for promoting Japan's
nuclear energy engineering expertise. As one of JAEA's missions,
the Center will foster intensive applied R&D to benefit society
by enhancing cooperation between the business and industrial sectors
and academia.
The Center hopes to be a platform to promote effective industrial
research domestically and internationally.
The Center's management
The Center's management will be comprised of a Special Advisory
Board to examine the Center's work and a technical investigation
group to evaluate and coordinate research themes with industry.
To encourage industrial sector participation, maximum restraints
will be imposed to assure confidentiality when needed by having
a formal confidentiality contract in effect. Further, efficient
utilization of the research and development capabilities of the
industrial sector will be emphasized, and the effective use of
JAEA's facilities and equipment will be employed for research
themes possessing especially high potential for practicality.
The Center's organization
The Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate's Director General
currently holds the position of the Center's Director. The center
will be comprised of R&D groups which will be under the direction
of the Center's Director. These groups will be under the direction
of the Center's Director. These groups will include leaders from
the industrial sector to coordinate the selection of research
activities. This system will foster cooperation among JAEA's related
Directorates, academia and industry.
The Center will ascertain the merits of ideas for exploitation
areas for energy development prior to the establishment of the
Special Advisory Board within the Center.
The Center's activities
The Center has executed a contract between KOBE STEEL, LTD that
involves the development of comprehensive nuclear material technology.
This initial collaborative contract with industry specifically
addresses advanced reprocessing materials. An advanced reprocessing
materials development group has been established. It has begun
research and development of applicable materials for an advanced
nuclear power system.
The center is presently located in the Tokai Research and Development
Center in Ibaraki Prefecture. We hope firms from both domestic
and international firms will investigate and participate in the
opportunities available here.
The Center hopes to play a decisive role in advancing nuclear
engineering research by close cooperation with the industrial
sector.
We look forward to your consideration and participation in the
activities of the newly established Nuclear Engineering Research
Collaboration Center.
