The Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project has now been ongoing for over two decades and has contributed significantly to the geological disposal project and the associated safety regulations in Japan.
The Horonobe International Project (HIP)
A new international collaboration project, the Horonobe International Project (HIP), was launched in February 2023 to tackle with common international challenges, based at the Horonobe URL.
The Horonobe Underground Research Center is the only unique centre of excellence in Japan, undertaking research and development on geological disposal technologies for high-level radioactive waste in deep subsurface environments.
Horonobe URL Project
The Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) Project is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary research and development (R&D) project with the primary goal of ensuring and enhancing the reliability of relevant geological disposal technologies through practical application to the geological environment within the host sedimentary rocks.

Commitments to the Community
In November 2000, the governor of Hokkaido, the mayor of Horonobe Town and the president of the JAEA signed an 'Agreement on the Research on Deep Geological Environment at Horonobe Town' to initiate and promote the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project.
