Activities of the Center

As for the decommissioning of “Fugen”, we plan to dismantle the facilities safely and rationally according to the Law for the Regulations of Nuclear Source Material, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors, taking account of the conditions of facilities which will need maintenance and management after finishing the operation. In addition, with reference to the “decommissioning”, we efficiently push forward dismantling and removal ensuring safety, and develop necessary technologies for the reduction of the amount of generated waste.

There are very few experiences with regard to the work of decommissioning of nuclear reactors in Japan and overseas. Therefore, in the Fugen project, we set up an internal committee consisting of specialists from universities, electric power parties, etc., and make efforts to achieve our duties while receiving their opinions about the orientation to decommissioning and the situation of research and development. In addition, toward the realization of pioneering decommissioning, we perform technical information exchange, collaborative investigation, the dispatch of engineers, etc. in mutual cooperation among electrical parties and universities in Japan, the U.K., France, Korea, and so on.

■We will collect information and dispatch it, putting forward the development of technology so as to reflect the technology of decommissioning of “Fugen” on light water reactors.

■We will further promote information exchange and the interchange of engineers so as to be able to perform safe and rational decommissioning through the collaboration with electric companies and research institutions in Japan, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development / Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA), bilateral agreements (the U.K., France), and so on.

■As a “cooperation to the projects of the government”, the facilities to be dismantled are utilized for the various investigations and researches of the government.

■In order to promote the decommissioning together with the local community, we will offer closer cooperation to the base plan of energy research and development by Fukui prefecture in collaboration with its local industry.
